The Sedentary Lifestyle
If a Pajé examined a fat person he would dianose an illness, since there was no obesity in the population in which he worked.
With the civilization and the growth of sedentary life, as well as the appearance of nobles, relations became interspersed with fear and fat, loosing all spontaneity.
To sit down, a person needs to have support, and childbirth becomes more difficult.
An example is given in the Home Manual for Childbirth, written in 1661 d.C. by a doctor from Nang Chang, Kiangsi, in the kingdom of Kang Hsi: “It is a book that everybody should know, not only the women. It is more valuable than a book with theatre pieces. It is so important that rich people should know it well, because their life style is so different from the rest of the world. They eat well, rich foods, most of them don’t get any exercise, their health is weak, their temperament is easily excited, and they seldom follow other people’s advice. When they feel a little pain, they call other persons immediately, the room gets noisy. Many midwives are invited, and each one of them wants to appear more than the other”.
